Oxford dictionary describes weaning as :
' To accustom an infant or other young mammal to food other than it's mothers milk.'
If you have weaned your little one or are currently going through the weaning process then you will know that it is so much more than that! There are so many different things to consider; Baby lead weaning, purees, how much milk they are getting, if the balance of food is right, are they eating too much, are they not eating enough....the list is endless...but I want to explain why, in my opinion, it doesn't matter which way you do it or how long it takes, that's okay...just feed you child the way you want and need to!
''Food is fun for under 1''
''Purees mean they won't be able to handle lumps in the future''
''He eats way to much for a baby of his age''
''Surely he shouldn't be eating things like that''
''He's too young to be weaning...if you wean him before he's six months then he will have so many problems when he older!'
These were all things that I heard when we were weaning Bubba and the majority of the time they were from random people who didn't know me or bubba or our situation. We started to wean bubba when he was just over 4 months old. Some of you out there may be thinking this is too early to start weaning but let me explain... Bubba suffered with silent reflux (see my post about that here!) and the best way for us to help him with it was for us to start weaning him. Before we started to I spoke to our GP and health visitors and they agreed that it was the best thing to do. It wasn't a reckless or rushed decision but something that we thought long and hard about and did it to help Bubba.
The other commented we used to get about giving Bubba purees was that it would force him to over eat, make him fat and some people even said it would mean he would gag and not eat lumps if we ever gave them to him. BULLS@:T!!!! I can honestly say that all of that is a load of rubbish. Bubba isn't fat, he doesn't gag at the sight of a lump and was never forced to eat more than he wanted. Now, he is almost 2 and eats most things. His favourite being spaghetti bolognas, gingerbread men, Yorkshire puddings and grapes. All of which have lumps in :)
So what I am saying is, if you are getting to that point of thinking about weaning then don't stress about it. Just think about the way that you want to do it and what would be best for your little one and go with it. If it doesn't work or it doesn't suit then that's okay...just change and try something else. Don't feel the pressure to do what the world wants you to do. You just do you :)
